Correctional Services rejects alarmist reactions to lost keys

The Department of Correctional Services wishes to reject as alarmist the reaction of one commentator published in some media regarding the lost key of one unit of the new Kimberley Correctional Centre.

The master key is safe. What got lost during the riots of 3 August 2010 is just an over-riding key of one unit of the new Kimberley Correctional Centre. The department wishes to assure all South Africans that steps have been taken to ensure uncompromised safety and security of all people in and outside of the Correctional Centre. Measures taken in the centre included:

  • Tightening security measures in the entire correctional centre to prevent any security breaches.
  • Starting a process of replacing a few affected locks to the value of less than R40 000, which would render any lost key irrelevant.

The department believes that with its open, proactive and determined leadership and management nationally and in the region, there is no reason to doubt the measures instituted to ensure that all people of South Africans are and feel safe.

The department however welcomes any independent deemed necessary as it has nothing to hide.
