Correctional Services National Commissioner Moyane welcomes the extension of the interim interdict and commends officials’ conduct

Correctional Services National Commissioner Tom Moyane has welcomed today’s (30 August 2010) Labour Court extension of an interim interdict granted last Friday against striking in Correctional Services by 30 days to 30 September 2010.

Addressing his first Executive Management meeting in Pretoria after returning from his international engagements, Commissioner Moyane also expressed his appreciation of the “exemplary conduct of correctional officials that ensured uncompromised delivery of correctional services under trying conditions of a national strike in the public service.”

He said the safety and security of the public, inmates and service providers in Correctional Centres is paramount.  The meeting also decided to put a moratorium on granting of new leave for the duration of the strike as part of contingency plans.  Disciplinary processes against an estimated 0.13% (52) of 41 000 correctional officials nationally will be instituted from today onwards with line managers implored to speed up the processes.

Commissioner Moyane said abnormal circumstances of a national public sector strike requires abnormal interventions and urged correctional officials to appreciate the moratorium on granting of new leave and other measures taken by management.

Today’s Labour Court decision extends the interim Interdict granted last Friday against striking in Correctional Services until 30 September 2010.  The interdict prohibits labour unions and its members from encouraging, promoting or instigating strike action by any official of Correctional Services.  The interdict is an additional measure to the standing Labour Relations Act which prohibits any industrial action by essential service officials.
