Second Barberton offender dies in Hospital

An offender that suffered third degree burns during a tragic fire incident in Barberton Youth Correctional Centre over the weekend, has passed on this afternoon, at Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

The 21-year-old offender (whose family has yet to be informed of his death) was admitted to Barberton Hospital on Saturday night and transferred on Sunday to Rob Ferreira Hospital. He was sentenced in terms of Sections 276 (1)(b) for theft and was due for parole placement in February 2015, while offender Zweli Zondo, who died on Saturday, was convicted for rape and due for parole placement in January 2015.

Eleven (11) of the 17 offenders involved in the incident, were discharged yesterday afternoon from Barberton Hospital, one was discharged on Saturday and five are still in hospital. Chief Deputy Commissioner James Smalberger, who led a high level delegation to Barberton yesterday, has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased offender.
