Correctional Services and National Library host Funda Mzantsi literary and poetry championships

Prisoners showcase literary and poetry prowess and reading championshiips!

More than 200 young prisoners from book clubs and correctional centres around South Africa will showcase their reading, writing and poetry skills during the forthcoming Funda Mzantsi Literary and Poetry Championships, to be held at the George City Hall from 1st to 5th October 2018. Western Cape Regional Commissioner Delekile Klaas praised the championships, an annual event hosted by the Department of Correctional Services in conjunction with the National Library of South Africa, adding that the event goes a long way in illustrating government’s rehabilitation programmes.

“Some of the offenders have really gained from these literary championships and will also showcase some of the book clubs that they have established since the championships were started nine years ago. Another important aspect of the Funda Mzantsi championships is that it creates a platform whereby youth from schools in the community get an opportunity to actually interact with their counterparts who are incarcerated and, thereby, sharing stories and experience of how not to fall into the dangerous trap of crime.
