Cooperatives engines of social economic development - Premier Modise

Cooperatives are engines for social economic development, addressing high level of unemployment, inequality and poverty that affects most rural masses and enable their members to become active and meaningful participants in local and national economies, says North West Premier Thandi Modise.

Premier Modise emphasised the importance of cooperatives ahead of the Africa Financial Cooperatives Summit 2013 that her province is hosting in partnership The African Confederation of Co-operative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA) in cooperation with Cooperative Bank Development Agency.

As a Pan-African Confederation of National Associations for Savings and Credit. Co-operatives, ACCOSCA will engage with national and international stakeholders drawn from the co-operative sector at the 14th annual SACCA congress to be held at Sun City outside Rustenburg as from Wednesday.

Modise who is to deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony and flag parade for participating countries to be held on Tuesday evening said that the province is honoured to be hosting the financial cooperatives summit on behalf on the country as a follow up on International Year of cooperatives Agenda through national sectoral bodies in Africa.

The objective of three-day summit to be held under the theme “Technology: Accelerating financial inclusion using Cooperative model” is to promote efficiency in cooperatives by advocating for adoption and usage of information technology and engage stakeholders in promoting and supporting initiatives that leads to a whole inclusive cooperative sector.

The summit has attracted CEO’s of small and medium cooperatives, financial institutions/development focused banks and related private sector, senior managers of large cooperatives, SACCO’s, Cooperative Board/Management Committees, Senior government and Agency’s officials, development partners involved in promoting and supporting the cooperative sector, officials working for research institutions, Universities and Colleges from across the continent and the African Diaspora.
