Cooperative Governance welcomes closure of initiation schools

The Ministry for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has welcomed the closing of two initiation schools by the local government and traditional Affairs MEC Manketse Tlhape in Delareyville and Boshoff, in the North West province, recently.

It is unacceptable that children are taken to these illegal initiation schools without their parents knowledge and worst still, be subjected to appalling conditions where there is lack of proper sanitation and running water.

The Ministry is concerned about the mushrooming of initiation schools that operated without proper permits and will take stern action against operators who are found to be flouting the law.

Initiation school operators are required by government regulations to apply for permits and to operate within the prescripts of the law. This will also assist in preventing unnecessary deaths of young boys.
