Cooperative Governance aims to resolve challenges facing Oudtshoorn Municipality

ANC and DA/Cope caucus request for audience with respective ministers

The Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Pravin Gordhan and MEC of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape, Mr Anton Bredell, have agreed to work jointly at resolving the challenges afflicting the Oudtshoorn Municipality.

The department welcomes the initiative taken by the political parties (ANC, DA, COPE) of the Oudtshoorn municipality to endorse the proposed “Back-to-Basics Support and Good Governance Package” offered by the national and provincial departments.

In a statement issued earlier today, the councillors openly stated that they would not support any litigation or court action by the Oudtshoorn municipality against the national or the provincial government.

Furthermore, the Minister appreciates the maturity of political leadership displayed by political parties in rising above their political differences to find lasting solutions in the interest of the community of Oudtshoorn.

The Minister and MEC will be visiting Oudtshoorn to engage with the key stakeholders and counsellors to discuss the implementation of the proposed “Back-to-Basics Support and Good Governance Package”.
