Concern over spate of fatal crashes

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is extremely outraged about the spate of fatal crashes that occurred countrywide over the weekend.

A number of people lost their lives in separate crashes that occurred in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and North West.

Most of the road accidents occur as a result of human and vehicle factor. We condemn the use of alcohol and we urge that road users refrain from consuming alcohol when using the roads.

The launch of the Make Roads Safe campaign clearly shows the commitment that RTMC has on road safety and also on working together in halving road accidents by 50% as part of the "decade of action", starting from this October Transport Month.

The new national rolling enforcement plan is another mechanism that the RTMC has employed in fighting the scourge on our roads.

We do appeal that all road users adhere to the rules of the road and to respect the shared space on our roads in order to allow fellow road users a safe journey.

Road crashes are preventable. Motorists are encouraged to report bad driving on 0861 400 800.
