Communications warns public against fake email

Public is warned against fake emails purportedly from Minister of Communication and intended to defraud the public

The Department of Communications wishes to warn members of the public against a fake email that has been widely circulated and purported to be from Minister Nomvula Mokonyane.

The email seeks to defraud recipients using the name of the Minister and equally, contains untruths that are offensive to name and character of the Minister.

The Minister wishes to state that the contents of the email are outrageous, illegal and the work of organized groups or individuals that use the name of prominent individuals and their families to defraud unsuspecting and vulnerable members of the public.

These scams have in the past used fake Facebook accounts in the name of Minister Mokonyane and other government Minister’s to illegally solicit funds from members of the public under the impression that these were to facilitate opportunities in BRICS related projects and other schemes of government.

A criminal case has been opened with the Brooklyn Police station in Pretoria and members of the public who have fallen victim to this scam are also encouraged to get in touch with the Police in order to assist the police in their investigations.
