Communications Minister General Siphiwe Nyanda appoints new members to the Digital Dzonga Advisory Council

The Minister of Communications General Siphiwe Nyanda today announced the new 15 members of Digital Dzonga Advisory Council.

The council will advise the minister on and oversee the complex process of migrating South Africa's analogue broadcasting services to a new digital technology known as digital terrestrial television (DTT).

The 15 members were drawn from more than 50 nominations submitted by the public following an invitation by the Department of Communications.

The call for nominations was made in April 2010 and 51 names were submitted for consideration. This list included nominees from a variety of backgrounds such as regulatory, signal distribution, legal, broadcasting, labour, consumer groups and government.

Deputy Minister Dina Pule chaired the shortlisting and the selection panel, which comprised officials from the department's Executive Committee and ministry.

The new members are:

  • Ms Nomvuyiso Batyi
  • Mr Dingane Dube
  • Mr Calvo Mawela
  • Ms Karen Willenberg
  • Mr Zubair Munshi
  • Mr Sabelo Silinga
  • Mr Richard Paulton
  • Advocate Cawekazi Mahlati
  • Mr Llewellyn Jones
  • Ms Julia Hope
  • Ms Masodi Xaba
  • Mr Hlukanisa Zitha
  • Ms Rosey Sekese (Department of Communications)

The members are appointed for a five year term.

Minister Nyanda wished the new members well and expressed his trust that they will utilise their wide ranging expertise to ensure a smooth and successful transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
