Committee on Human Settlements slams evictions of former factory workers

The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements has criticised a Cape Town company (Brick & Clay Cape) for its intention to evict eight families from their homes in Frankdale, near Visserhoek, by next month.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Nomhle Dambuza said throwing people out of their homes without providing alternative accommodation was not only illegal, but inhumane and insensitive. “Where does the company want these people, who have given their lives to its wealth, to go? Dedicating 50 years of your life ensuring your employer’s success, only to be stripped off your roof and kicked out to the streets is unjust,” said Ms Dambuza.

The families have lived in these three-bedroom houses since 1988 but were served with eviction notices in March this year, following their retirement. These houses were part of the company’s plan to ensure employees lived closer to their place of work.

According to Ms Dambuza, any person or entity intending to evict people, need to follow due process which includes provision of alternative accommodation fit for human habitation as well as obtaining a court order.
