Commission for Gender Equality response to allegations

With reference to the allegations made against the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) Chairperson in an article in the Mail and Guardian on the 6 March 2009 a Plenary of commissioners of the Commission for Gender Equality on the 19 March noted the allegations with concern. Therefore to uphold the integrity of the institution commissioners resolved by consensus to request a full external investigation into these allegations. Guided by the Commission for Gender Equality Act we requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Gwen Mahlangu Nkabinde, to convene an investigation.

It would therefore be inappropriate for the CGE to make any further comments until we have received the findings of the requested investigation. With reference to the statement in the Mail and Guardian article on the 13 March 2009 regarding in fighting amongst commissioners we place on record that difference of opinion is entirely normal and often fruitful. We are guided by the conviction of the importance of principles and policy over personality.

We are striving towards creating an institution that practices a culture of collective authority and accountability which forms the basis of team work and a culture of collegiality. These principles will direct and guide the interaction of all commissioners and staff. Above all we are striving towards implementing our mandate of ensuring and creating a society free from gender oppression and inequality.
