Commission for Gender Equality responds to the rape of 6 week old baby

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has noted with grave concern the rape of a 6 week old baby allegedly at the hands of her 24 year old uncle.

“Gender based violence has reached a crisis proportion in South Africa, despite our efforts in raising awareness on issues of violence against women and children”.

“This year, alone the country was in shock at the harrowing rape and murder of Anene Booysen,  the death of Reeva Steenkamp, the rape and murder of Duduzile Zozo, the rape and murder of the Diepsloot toddlers and now we are hit with yet another blow as a result of the rape of a 6 week old toddler. I would like to appeal to all South Africans to unite against abuse of women and children”, said Mfanozelwe Shozi, Chairperson of the CGE.

The rape of 6 week year old calls for a renewed vision in finding interventions that are meant to clamp down on the scourge of violence against women and children. The murder and rape of the 6 week old baby occurs during 16 days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children, a campaign that is aimed at raising awareness of the scourge on gender based violence. The CGE applaud the police for moving swiftly in arresting the alleged perpetrator.
