The Commission for Gender Equality supports the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Of No Violence Against Women campaign that will be spearheaded by national government in Mbombela, Mpumalanga on 25 November 2023. This year's themes: Acceleration To End Gender-Based Violence And Femicide: Leaving No One Behind, and Access for Women to Clean Water, highlight the multi-pronged approach needed to stem out GBVF and the oppression of women.
The CGE is mandated by the Constitution to hold both the public and private sectors accountable in redressing inequalities that lead to GBVF. Access to clean water is enshrined in chapter 2 of the Bill of Rights as a basic human right.
The lack of provision of clean water perpetuates the cycle of poverty and hardship for rural women, upon whose shoulders the responsibility of healthy families lies. The National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set a clear growth path in ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Apart from following the national calendar on important calendar days as informed by both the theme and sub-theme, the commission as per its legislative mandate derived from the CGE Act 39 of 1996 as amended and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, equally informed by its Annual Performance Plan (APP) will be conducting its own activities that are geared towards curbing the GBV scourge during the 16 days of activism campaign as per the enclosed Calendar of Events.
