Clarkebury continues to benefit from Madiba legacy project

Learners at Clarkebury Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape have been provided with the tools to improve both academically and on the sports field following the handover of brand new facilities.

The school community were the proud recipients of a brand-new multipurpose sports facility as well as a new, fully equipped science lab. The facilities were donated to the school community by Paarl Media and SABS respectively.

The handover of these facilities were the culmination of the school’s involvement in the 94+ Projects for Madiba campaign. The campaign was started by Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga in 2012 to honour the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela by improving the material conditions at more than 94 of South Africa’s neediest schools.

The improvements at Clarkebury, one of the former president’s former schools, is just one example of how schools which were part of the 94+ Projects for Madiba campaign continue to benefit from partnerships with big business initiated in 2012.

Speaking at the official handover of the facilities on Tuesday 24 September, Minister Motshekga said that the improvements to the school were just another step in Clarkebury SS’s journey to reclaiming its former glory as one of the top schools in the area.

“It is fitting that we are here to witness the delivery of these facilities on Heritage Day, as Clarkebury occupies a place of pride in the region, with its rich history and cultural heritage,” said Minister Motshekga.

“It also fills me with pride that a year after launching the 94+ Projects for Madiba campaign our business partners continue to come to the party and fulfil promises made to our school communities. Not only here, but throughout the country.”

Minister Motshekga added that through partnerships like these, government and business could work together to build better, fully equipped schools which would enable learners to achieve their full potential, no matter their individual circumstances.
