Chief Justice on shortlisted candidates for Electoral Commission vacancy

During the week of 19 September 2014, the Office of the Chief Justice published notices in the media calling for nominations of interested persons to fill a vacancy in the Electoral Commission which occurred following the resignation of Adv Tlakula, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. The closing date for submission of nominations was set for 10 October 2014. On 28 October 2014, a Panel chaired by the Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, comprising of the Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality and the Public Protector, established in terms of section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act, 1996, met and compiled a short list of candidates to be interviewed at its sitting to be held at a place still to be determined on 20-21 November 2014. The following candidates are on the short list:
 
  1. Ambassador Sheila Margaret Camerer;
  1. Mrs Hlaleleni Kathleen Dlepu;
  2. Prof Mzamo Alexander Gumbi;
  3. Mrs Rebecca Madipoane Queendy Gungubele;
  4. Adv Salome Ngwanamathiba Khutsoane;
  5. Ms Janet Love;
  6. Ms Linky Ramakgahlela Mamoepa;Mr Vuma Glenton Mashinini;Ms Tembeka Koekie Mdlulwa;
  7. Mr Lumko Caesario Mtimde;
  8. Mr Zwoitwaho Calvin Nevhutalu;
  9. Adv Motlatjo Josephine Ralefatane;
  10. Mr Jonas Ben Sibanyoni; and
  11. Mr Maruping Michael Wildebees.

The shortlisted candidates will be notified of the time and venue of the interviews in due course.

In recognition of the principles of transparency and openness, the Panel has resolved to allow any interested person to comment on the shortlisted candidates. It would be appreciated if such comments could reach the Office of the Chief Justice by no later than 12 November 2014. The media and the public at large will also be allowed to attend the interviews.
