Building planned for Mdantsane school

An administration block is to be built at Moses Mabhida High School in Mdantsane, using "alternative technology".

The announcement was made by the provincial Department of Finance, Economic Development and Environmental Affairs on Tuesday, 20 July at the school. The block will house a staff room, a computer room, a science laboratory and a library.

A partnership between the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the provincial Departments of Finance and Education, and local political structures, the new facility is expected to help learners with their studies.

Speaking at the official site handover, Graham January from the Department of Education in the East London district said, "While building the new block the service provider will use an alternative technology but the end result will look like the existing building."

Explaining the technology, the chief executive of Circle Capital Developments, Harold Rugara, said the appointed service provider would use a light gate steel framing to build the facility.

"The equipment is equivalent to all international steel frames and has been used to build various buildings locally and internationally," he said. "There will be a technical team that will monitor the progress, quality and product of the building and time frames."

According to January, the department expects the contractor to set and stick to the given time frames for the facility to be finished on time.

Speaking to staff and learners at Moses Mabhida High School, Mawethu Rune, from the office of the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Environmental Affairs, said education was a key to improving the lives of South Africans and transforming youngsters from the current challenges to better socio-economic status.

"It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, which a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation." A date had not yet been finalised for construction to begin,” said Rune.
