Billion Rand development for small town of Ndumo

The lives of residents living in the border town of Ndumo in uMkhanyakude District Municipality, which is close to the Mozambique border, is set to change forever. This is due to a mega project that has been undertaken by the Provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal under the leadership of Premier Honourable Senzo Mchunu, to build a new town in Ndumo which will have state of the art commercial and government services.

This new town, which is the 3rd new town to be developed since the inception of democracy in the country, will bring job opportunities and alleviate poverty form this community.

On Saturday, 30 November 2013, the Premier together with his Provincial Cabinet visited the area to follow up on the progress that is being made on the construction of the various facilities aimed at uplifting the community. Chief amongst these is the Shamula Water Scheme, which is being coordinated by the department of Cogta, which is under the leadership of MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

According to Dube-Ncube, this water project, will supply water to over 2 000 families living in Ndumo and surrounding areas. Her department has invested R86 million into this project so that access to clean safe drinking water can be a reality for all families.

The total investment that has been made by the Provincial government into this project is over R1 billion and these include the construction of the P435, D1841 and D1851 roads in Ndumo. The department of education is building a new school for R200 million. The department of health is building a clinic worth over R22 Million, which will provide primary health care package of 24 hours services per day.

The department of arts and culture is building a Library, which will have over 10 000 books, to be used by learners and members of the public. The Department of Sports and Recreation is building the Ndumo Sports field, which will be used by young and old in the community.

The Department of Human Settlements and Public Works is looking into the zoning of certain parts of Ndumo for residential purposes, or for private developers to use. The Department of Social Development has committed R54 Million, towards the building of community center that will offer a range of services to the community.
