Basic Education on establishment of education dedicated television channel

Educational channel to ensure learner curriculum support and ongoing teacher development

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Platco Digital to establish DBE dedicated television channels to support learners and teachers and to enhance the teaching and learning experience.

Through the MoU, Platco Digital has committed to providing the DBE with two TV channel platforms - one for primary schools (Grade R – 7) and the other for secondary schools (Grade 8 – 12).  The channels broadcast educational programmes 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week and currently runs on OVHD channel 201 and DSTV channel 319.

In addition to the DBE channels, Platco Digital has committed to funding the provision and installation of decoders and dishes to 1000 schools with own TV set across the country. To date more than 600 schools received their decoders and dishes and are enjoying Mindset educational content.

This initiative seeks to improve learner performance in Literacy, Numeracy, Languages, Mathematics and Sciences by exposing as many learners as possible to quality teaching. The channel and accompanying learning material are aimed at contributing towards improving learner achievement, as well as support the teaching of these and other subjects.
