Basic Education committee wishes class of 2013 well with final exams

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education wishes the class of 2013 well with National Senior Certificate exams, which commences today.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Hope Malgas, says the exams are the culmination of years of schooling in an aim to get learners ready for the future. There are 707 136 candidates registered across 6 699 examination centres. A total of 576 490 are fulltime and 130 646 are part-time candidates.

Ms Malgas says she is confident that the Department of Basic Education will administer the exams in a credible and effective manner. The department has a history of good examination management.

It is hoped that the class of 2013 could emulate and even surpass the achievements of their predecessors, who over the last five years had shown a steady and consistent increase in the matric pass rate. This culminated in the 75.7% rate achieved last year.

Ms Malgas encourages parents, family, friends and educators to give learners all the support they need to successfully complete their exams.
