Bad smelling sewer a thing of the past in Kokstad

The residents of the historic area of Kokstad will breathe a heavy sigh of relief as a result of a new multi-million rand project that is to help improve the local sewer system, which has generated a bad smell across the South Coast community for some time.

Kokstad became infamous in the recent years when it emerged that the local sewer system, which had not been designed to accommodate the fast growing population, was no longer coping and had become so congested that a daily stench had become synonymous with the town and was posing a health hazard on the residents.

On 12 November the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mrs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, launched the Franklin Bulk Water project, which cost R20 million.

According to Dube-Ncube “the provincial government has spent more than R20 million in an attempt to improve living conditions in the area and undo the ills of apartheid planning”. A total of more than 10 600 families are to benefit from the entire development, which is in line with the country’s 20-year vision of eliminating poverty, joblessness and fostering an equal society.
