Acting Premier Raymond Elisha urges AMCU to maintain peace during strike

Acting Premier Raymond Elisha appeals to AMCU to respect framework for peace and stability in the mining industry during planned strike

North West Acting Premier and MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Raymond Elisha has appealed to Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) to ensure that its members conduct themselves in accordance with the framework for peace and stability in the mining industry during their planned strike.

Acting Premier Elisha’s appeal follows news that AMCU members had voted in favour of a strike over wages at world number two platinum producer Impala Platinum (Implats).

“While we respect the constitutional right of workers to exercise their right to strike as entrenched in the Bill of Rights, we wish to urge AMCU to ensure that the strikers comply with the Labour Relations Act.

No worker should be intimidated or threatened in anyway and the rights of non-striking workers are respected,” said the Acting Premier. Elisha appealed to AMCU to explore other avenues, such as the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, to solve their dispute before resorting to strike.

He stressed that unprotected strikes should be avoided as they often have disastrous repercussions for all those involved, as in the case of Marikana, which he said is still fresh in our minds.
