Acting MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo outraged at the fatal shooting of traffic officer on duty

Acting MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo, is outraged by yesterday’s fatal shooting of the Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Inspectorate’s (RTI) officer while on duty.

Provincial Inspector, Mr. Mzwandile Dinga, was conducting speed timing enforcement on M-25 (Dumisani Makhaye Highway) outside KwaMashu, near Durban, yesterday morning, when he was shot by unknown assailants.

According to a police report, Dinga and a colleague had stopped a speeding motorist when the suspects emerged and held them at gun point. The three suspects then fired shots at Dinga wounding his left arm and chest, before they disappeared from the scene. Dinga was then rushed to hospital, but later passed on.

MEC Dhlomo has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Dinga family, but vowed that perpetrators of this sordid act will soon be brought to book.

“We are very disturbed by this callous murder of our traffic officer. It is painful now that our traffic officers are becoming a target for criminals. We urge communities to defend our traffic officers against these vicious criminals. Dinga was one of the most dedicated traffic officers who committed his life to promoting safety on our roads. I would like to call on all traffic officers to honour him by ensuring that nobody escapes with a transgression on our roads. On behalf of the Government, I would like to send our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues,” said MEC Dhlomo.

MEC Dhlomo also urged the police to fast-track their investigations to ensure that Dinga’s murderers are arrested.
