Despite the widely-publicised threats approximately 97% of Eastern Cape learners, who are benefiting in the scholar transport programme were successfully transported to their respective schools this morning.
There were few reported challenges in Lusikisiki, Ngcobo and King Williams Town, but officials of One Future Development 46 have addressed those challenges.
Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu had issued a directive that the following should be in place by Monday 16 July:
- Vehicles engaged to provide Scholar Transport services must have been tested for road worthiness
- Officials of the department should monitor the transportation of learners to various centres of learning.
On Friday 13 July, the department convened a meeting of Traffic Officers and Transport Inspectors from all six Districts as well as officials from the Public Transport Directorate to craft a plan for the week begining on 16 July 2012. The following resolutions were taken:
- District Managers will be the coordinators of the plan in their various Districts.
- All logistical requirements for the execution of the plan tabled below are in place
- The plan should be duly communicated to all the Districts for execution on Monday the 16 July 2012
