50 learner transport taken off the road

The Gauteng Traffic Police of the Department of Community Safety today, 22 September 2011, discontinued 50 of the 54 learner transport vehicles tested at Krugersdorp Municipality Testing Centre. All the vehicles discontinued had severe mechanical defects ranging from brake failure, steering mechanism, worn out tyres and shocks.

In the event of an accident more people will be involved compared to private vehicles. The MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko calls upon intensified operations on public and learners transport. As on all operations to date, 95% of vehicles tested have been discounted due to defects. This creates unsafe environment for both drivers and commuters alike.

This comes as a result of on-going project for the MEC Mazibuko prioritised for the 2011 financial year.

In just three days last week, the Gauteng Traffic Police discontinued 78 PUTCO buses operating along Moloto road in Pretoria. Sadly to say, some of these buses resumed operation ignoring presenting the vehicle for road worthy test prior.
