40 Companies show interest in the Umthatha Airport Upgrade Project

A total of 40 companies showed their interest in the Mthatha Airport repair and upgrade project by attending the compulsory briefing session, which was held at the airport yesterday.

The bidding process will be closed on 30 June 2011 at 11h00 and 90 days after that the appointed company will resume the repairing and upgrade of the airport. The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has allocated R63million for the project.

Expected to take 10 months to complete, this upgrade is in line with the department’s Blue Skyway Aviation Strategy which seeks to improve the conditions and services of provincial airports, particularly Bhisho and Mthatha airports.

In order to qualify and be considered, bidders must be registered with Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), must have a designation of 8 GB and must pay a non –refundable deposit of R400.00. Tender documents were made available at the Department of Transport Head Offices Room C1, Stellenbosch Park Building, in Schornville King William’s Town, as of Monday 6 June 2011.

Once completed the documents must be addressed and hand delivered to a tender bid box that will be situated at the C Block entrance foyer of the department’s offices, also in King Williams Town.

Mthatha Airport has further received international attention at the Department of Transport International Investors Conference held in Cape Town earlier this week, when the provincial department made the presentation on the future plans for the airport.

There were companies that showed interest and the department has mandated the Director for Civil Aviation, Noel Godwin, to further engage with these potential investors.

In his address during the conference, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele announced Mthatha Airport as one of the key strategic areas for investment in South Africa.
