33 arrested for drunken driving

North West Traffic Authorities have expressed serious concern about the number of people who continue to violate traffic laws, by driving under the influence alcohol, especially during the weekends. About 33 people have been arrested for drunken driving around the Mafikeng area, during the JAWS operation that lasted through the Saturday night until early hours of Sunday.

Traffic Authorities have vowed to fight the ever increasing number of drunken driving offences and will further continue to advocate for harsher sentences. Last week alone about 23 people were arrested across the province for the same offence.

Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison MEC Nono Maloyi, congratulated traffic officials for the hard work they have put in arresting those offenders. “I think the operations are starting to assist in reducing the number of accidents on our roads. We are going to save many lives through these operations and those found on the wrong side of the law will be seriously punished,” said MEC Maloyi.

Drunken driving is one of the contributory factors that lead to the ever increasing fatalities on national and provincial roads. Traffic authorities said that they will stop at nothing in enforcing compliance on provincial roads.
