31 taxis impounded

The Gauteng Traffic Police today impounded 31 taxis operating without documents, permits and not even in possession of receipts as proof that they have applied for operating licenses.

Two taxi ranks were inspected, Faraday and Noord. The operation that took place at Noord and Faraday taxi ranks in central Johannesburg is part of transport month under the theme 'safety in public transport facilities, state of readiness for 2010'. More arrests are expected as operations are continuing.

MEC for Gauteng Community Safety, Khabisi Mosunkutu urge operators to ensure compliance with Gauteng Public Passenger Road Transport Act, as failure to do, puts lives of commuters at risk as majority of our people rely on public transport.

MEC also urged Gauteng Traffic Police and all law enforcement agencies to act decisively on all operators who do not comply in order to ensure that Gauteng roads are safer.
