23 Public Utility Transport Corporation (PUTCO) buses taken off the road

Department of Community Safety Traffic Police today discontinued 23 PUTCO buses from operation. The incident comes after the Traffic Police stopped and inspected busses along the Moloto road and Pretoria, as part of the MEC’s ongoing priority for public and learner transport. All buses are to resume operation once all vehicle defects including brake failure, steering mechanism, worn out tyre and shocks have been corrected and subjected to roadworthy test.

Moloto road is notorious for accidents where majority of them are because of vehicle defects particularly involving buses. The spokesperson for Gauteng Traffic Police Busaphi Nxumalo said ‘it is only through regular operations such as these that Gauteng roads will be safer for motorists and pedestrians alike. The defects are serious, and a collision could happen at any time. The company should take the lives of commuters serious as one death is one too many” said Busaphi Nxumalo.

It was only yesterday when 153 out of 164 learner transport failed when tested at Hammanskraal Testing Centre, Pretoria.
