As part of enhancing road safety in Mpumalanga, traffic officials from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison discontinued at least 229 unroadworthy vehicles last week (14 to 20 October).
The operations, which are part of the on-going Transport Month activities, were aimed at decreasing accidents while enhancing law enforcement on the road. Discontinued vehicles include light motor vehicles, busses and mini busses.
During the operations 280 vehicles were also impounded whilst 14 motorists were also arrested for offences ranging from drunken driving, overloading, driving without licenses and others. During the operation, 52 637 vehicles were stopped.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times and that they have valid documentation to be on the road.
“Vehicles which are not roadworthy contribute to the high volume of road accidents that we have seen so far,” said Shongwe. The MEC has indicated that such operations will take place on regular basis to ensure that lives on the roads are saved.
The department would further prioritise cell phones violations as this endangers lives of other innocent road users.
