2011 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secondary School Essay Competition are open

South African learners are invited to participate in the annual Southern African Development Community (SADC) Essay Competition for Secondary Schools

All high school learners are encouraged to take part in the competition to demonstrate their commitment to social change.

Topic for the essay this year is “Some SADC Member States have made progress on the SADC 50:50 policy on representation and participation of women in political and decision making positions at all levels. What are the main challenges that slow down progress on this policy and what measures should be put in place to ensure that the policy is fully implemented by all Member States?”

Why learners should enter?

  • Be a part of SADC initiative.
  • How the issue of 50:50 representation will change our country's future.
  • Make sure your voices are heard on gender parity
  • Show that you are committed to gender equity
  • The gender issue is as important for men as women
  • The youth voice is important as the youth are key to our future

The essay should not be less than 1000 words and not more than 2 000 words. Entrants that have access to computers are advised to type their entries and submit both soft and hard copies. They may sign and initial each page of the hard copies to ensure that they have not been altered.

Adjudication will take place firstly at a provincial level. Winning entries from provinces will be submitted to the department no later than 30 April 2011. National adjudication will take place and winning entries will be forwarded to the SADC Secretariat no later than 31 May 2011. Late entries are automatically disqualified.

Deadline for submission of entries is the end of April 2011. Submissions must be submitted to relevant provincial coordinators.
