2010 school holiday programme

The Gauteng integrated holiday programme will be launched today, Tuesday 8 June 2010 at Greensfields Primary Shoool in Zonkesiswe. The department has developed an extensive action plan to mitigate all risks associated with the 2010 World Cup to ensure that all children and women are protected from criminal activities and violence and abuse of any kind.

Holiday programmes are in place, a number of programmes during the five week period that are focussed on preparing matriculants for the final examinations at the end of the year. The Gauteng province is offering a variety of interventions for matriculants including help lines staffed by subject experts and winter schools for learners across districts.

The programme is aimed at consolidating efforts of taking learners off the streets during the World Cup tournament and preparing them for the end of the year examinations. It will be launched throughout the province and activities will be happening at 51 Hubs identified by sports, recreation, arts and culture plus at the 143 sites identified by the Gauteng Department of Education.

The programme has been divided into pillars which will be the drivers of these activities starting from 10 June 2010 until 10 July 2010 at all identified Hubs and GDE sites. It is targeted at the Foundation phase, Intermediates, Senior Intermediates, Further Education Training (FET) and out of school youth.

The foundation phase, intermediates, senior intermediates and FET learners will be catered for at Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) sites while the out of school youth will be catered for at the Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SRAC) Hubs.

The initiative is targeted at all the grades, will be rolled out at more than 240 sites including schools and community hubs across Gauteng. The programme will run until 9 July and youngsters who enrol will be participating in sporting activities; excursions and arts and crafts classes.

This programme is done in partnership with the Departments of Education, Community Safety, Economic Development, Health and Social Development and Gauteng Tourism Authority.

Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Nelisiwe Moerane and other MECs are expected to officiate the launch.
Parents and care givers are encouraged to contact their children's schools so that they are informed of what holiday programmes are being conducted, both for matriculants and other learners in senior grades as well as programmes for younger learners.
