2010 fever hits Soweto as thousands turn up for Gauteng Family Fun Day

The build up to next year's 2010 FIFA World Cup was given a major boost as thousands of people turned up for the Gauteng 2010 Family Fun Day event in Klipspruit, Soweto.

The Family Fun day, a Gauteng Provincial Government initiative, aims to build-up excitement ahead of the World Cup and ensure the people are actively involved as hosts of the biggest football festival. Premier Nomvula Mokonyane urged Gauteng residents to extend a hand of friendship to visitors and ensure that the tournament is a huge success.

"The World Cup starts and ends here in Gauteng. We must welcome our visitors with a smile and make sure they only have good things to say about us when they go back home. We must give them such a treat that they will want to come back to Gauteng after the world cup," said Mokonyane.

Mokonyane said government would provide public viewing areas for those who cannot afford to go to the stadium. The Hyundai Park was turned into a mini world cup with several sporting activities taking place. These included football, netball and volleyball among others. There was also a kiddie's play area to keep the young ones busy and entertained.
