1 500 needy households to benefit from the department's food security programme

The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Desbo Mohono says the department plans to establish vegetable gardens for 1 500 rural households as part of the “One family, One food garden” campaign. Mohono says eight community gardens will also be established. This was said today, Thursday 16 May, during the tabling of the departmental budget vote for 2013/14 at the Provincial Legislature.

This initiative is aimed at providing support to the impoverished families in a concerted effort to improve access to affordable and diverse food. Mohono told the Legislature that this food security programme will target subsistence farmers, women, youth, farm workers, veterans, the disabled, older persons and school children.

“Farm schools which will benefit from this programme are Reitshokile Combined, Onkgomotse Combined, Madiba High and Moedswil Combined”, announced MEC Mohono.

The “One family, One food garden” campaign was launched yesterday by MEC Mohono at Verdwaal village in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality, where vegetable gardens were established for identified needy families, as part of the campaign launch.
