World Statistics Day

The United Nations has declared 20 October 2010 World Statistics Day.

On this day, the world will celebrate the first ever World Statistics Day, to raise awareness of the many achievements of official statistics premised on the core values of service, professionalism and integrity.

The Minister in the Presidency: Planning, Trevor Manuel (MP), together with the Statistician-General, Pali Lehohla, will appear before parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance to give a briefing.

Lehohla is also expected to hand over a countdown clock to Parliament, which will remind the lawmakers about Census 2011 and the importance of the data it produces.

A press conference is also scheduled which will give Manuel and Lehohla an opportunity to engage with the media.

Statistics play a crucial role in the policy making process - government officials need good data to make informed decisions.
