World Habitat Day

The United Nations has designated 5 October 2009 as World Habitat Day ushering in World Habitat Week. The intention is to work with United Nations member countries especially developing nations to provide housing for the people especially the poor.

In South Africa government has been able to build 2,7 million houses in the past fifteen years and about 650 000 have been build in Gauteng. The Gauteng Department of Local government and Housing is poised to build more houses this year which will be given to people who have registered to be on the demand database.

UN Habitat will today award those countries who have shown serious commitment and initiative towards housing the poor and marginalised. The MEC for Local Government and Housing is also among those waiting to receive this United Nations Honours on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government.
