Working for water Vehicle Safety Campaign

The Department of Transport’s Road Safety Education in conjunction with Department of Water Affairs, (working for water), Gamtoos Region will hold its annual Vehicle Safety Campaign on 22 to 23 September 2010 at Struandale, Department of Roads and Public Works grounds, Port Elizabeth.

About 60 drivers from working for water will participate in this campaign, including female drivers from the organisation. Drivers will be tested on the track and on the road and will also be given an opportunity to watch a video on safe driving.

“Through this campaign we will be focusing on enhancing and improving driving skills of the drivers as well as reducing crashes,” says MEC for Transport Ghishma Barry.

“The campaign also serves as an incentive for the business sector to invest in advanced driver training, thus presenting a sound business case for excellent returns on investments,” added Barry.

Objectives:

  • To reduce daily carnages and fatalities on our roads and street network, through Road Safety Education and Awareness
  • The campaign will enhance the driving skills, professionalism, competence and safety consciousness of motor vehicle drivers
  • To ensure that skilled drivers contribute to saving of human lives and reduction of vehicle maintenance costs, including fleet management
  • To ensure that in-house driver training serves as an incentive for the business sector to invest in advanced driver-training for the drivers
  • To ensure compliance to Road Traffic Act and Regulations for Road Safety.

The Vehicle Safety Campaign is not only for driving skills development and education; it also forms the cornerstone to improve Road Safety throughout the Southern African Developing Countries
