Minister Lulu Xingwana leads delegation to 58th Session of United Nations Convention on the Status of Women, 10 to 21 Mar

Gapsin the achievement of MDGs under the spotlight

As the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) fast approaches, South Africa has joined other UN Member States, UN Entities and NGOs accredited by the United Nations across the world to deliberate on the challenges and achievements in the implementation of the MDGs for women and girls.

This is taking place during the 58th Session of United Nations Convention on the Status of Women from 10 to 21 March in New York.

Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities Lulu Xingwana is leading the South African delegation which includes the following deputy ministers, Advocate Michael Masutha of Science and Technology, Elizabeth Thabethe, of Trade and Industry and Pam Tshwete of Rural Development and Land Reform. Also in attendance is the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality, Ms Thoko Mpumlwana and the CEO for the commission Ms Keketso Maema, and representatives from the civil society and NGOs.

South Africa is participating in various activities of the Session and will hold bilateral discussion with other countries, including the hosting of the following side events:

  • Zooming into the Challenges and Impediments in achieving the implementation of MDGs on Education for girls and their training on science and technology under the Theme: The future young women want – 14 March
  • Economic Empowerment and Eradication of Poverty & Hunger under the theme: Sharing strategies and best practices to enhance Economic Empowerment and Eradication of Poverty – 17 March
