Labour Minister Oliphant heads East to tie co-operation with PRC counterpart in areas of human resource and social security

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant will head a departmental delegation on a week-long visit to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), in which she will foster co-operation with his Chinese peer in the fields of human resources and social security.

In the PRC, Oliphant will be hosted by PRC’s Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, Yin Weimin. The Minister will leave South Africa tomorrow (24 August) and return on Friday (30 August).

The latest trip is as a result of the meeting between the two Ministries in June at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conference in Geneva, whereby a need for renewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was mooted.

This has been done and the Minister will be travelling there at the behest of her counterpart not only to sign this MOU but also to further cement the ties between the two countries and to look at areas of co-operation. China is an important partner not only through the BRICS economic bloc, but also through the trade that SA has with that country.

The Minister feels that it would be good for the rest of the citizens to be kept abreast of the developments in the labour field hence the invitation.

Oliphant’s delegation will include Department of Labour’s officials who specialises in the areas of collective bargaining, industrial relations, inspections and enforcement services as well as social protection.

During the trip Oliphant will among others visit the Local Labour Inspection Bureau; Social Insurance Bureau; and Public Employment Centre.
