Tshwane holds pre-COP17 Climate Change Conference

The City of Tshwane will host a pre-COP17 Conference on Climate Change on Friday, 25 November 2011 at the Solomon Mahlangu Square (Amphitheatre) in Mamelodi from 09:00 to 15:00.

The Executive Mayor, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa wishes to raise awareness in communities around issues of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP) under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), taking place in Durban, South Africa, from 28 November  to 9 December.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Convention. It keeps under regular review the implementation of the Convention and takes the decisions necessary to promote its effective implementation and is the only comprehensive binding multinational agreement mechanism to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The pre-conference theme, “Talking green with the community”, will serve as a platform for dialogue on climate change, community involvement in innovative clean and green projects.

The Tshwane pre-COP17 conference will involve key government departments, public interest groups, organised labour, business and industry associations and the community. The conference will provide all key climate change stakeholders and the community with an update on the most recent climate research and associated City of Tshwane initiatives and interventions.
