Student leadership conference on citizenship, democracy and governance

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) will be hosting the National Student Leadership Conference on Citizenship, Democracy and Governance, from 19 to 22 August 2010 at the African Leadership Academy near Johannesburg.

This conference is a follow up of the SRC Colloquium hosted in April 2007 with the aim of increasing awareness about electoral democracy development, professional management of Student Representative Council (SRC) elections and the improvement of voter turnout for SRC elections within the sector.

The key stakeholders in this project include the Electoral Commission of South Africa; Department of Higher Education and Training; South African Union of Students and 23 Public Higher Education Institutions. 

Delegates from all over the country have been invited and participants include representatives from university and university of technology student representative councils (SRCs), SRCs of colleges for further education and training, youth organisations and national student organisations.

Media arrangements for the student leadership conference

You are invited to the Student Leadership Conference hosted by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and the Department for Higher Education and Training (DHET). 

The Conference will take place at the African Leadership Academy, 1050 Printech Avenue, Honeydew near Johannesburg, Gauteng, from Thursday, 19 August to Sunday, 22 August 2010.

General notes

  • All sessions of the conference will be open to the media.
  • All participants for the conference must be registered. Registration will take place at the African Leadership Academy from Thursday, 19 August 2010 between 14h00 and 17h00 and Friday and Saturday from 08h00 to 16h00. Members of the media who are interested in attending any part of the conference and are not able to register at the mentioned times or need a map to the African Leadership Academy, should please contact: Lydia Young
