Stop Abuse against Women and Children campaign

Following the rise in crime around the country and in the Eastern Cape in particular the Eastern Cape Youth Commission (ECYC) has embarked on a series of campaigns that aim to educate the youth about abstaining from criminal activities and concentrate of education.

This follows the recent rapes and assault on elderly people in Dimbaza by young youth and the recent tragedy of Mdantsane pupil who was allegedly raped by her school teacher. It is against this background that Eastern Cape Youth Commissioner Sinethemba Mashalaba will address the youth from Duncan Village during the Stop Abuse against Women and Children campaign.

The event, in partnership with the South African Police Services (SAPS), will see youth being advised on alternative behaviour that will lead them to focus on more important issues like education, sport and youth development.

Pupils from surrounding schools and out of school youth are targeted as programmes that are currently being run by the ECYC will be unveiled. Also clarity about the dissolution of the ECYC will also be given.

“We as government are and will continue to fight abuse of any kind. The ECYC took a resolution that awareness around this issue should not be left for the 16 Days of Activisms against Women and Children, it should be done all year round.

“We have no place for criminals in this country and we will make sure that they are put behind bars and the keys will be thrown away. Bazawuchama Bawusele.”

The campaign will be held at Gompo Hall in Duncan village on 19 September 2009 at 10h00
