Public Protector and United Kingdom (UK) counterpart to hold seminar on how citizens failed by state are redressed

Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela and her United Kingdom counterpart, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, will hold a national seminar on how ombudsman institutions should redress citizens failed by governments.

The seminar is part of the activities Ms Abraham, who has a history of taking firm remedial action to correct state wrongs, will engage in during her two-day stay in South Africa. She is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with the Public Protector to share good practices and experience. The two institutions will sign a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at fostering cooperation between them on Wednesday, 18 August 2010.

The seminar will be held under the theme: “Ombudsman, making a difference in providing remedial action when the state fails its people: the United Kingdom Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman experience.”
