Premier Mokonyane to pay tribute to the late Reverend Sam Buti

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will pay her respects at the funeral of the late Reverend Dr Sam Buti.

The late reverend played a prominent role in South Africa's liberation by publicly advocating for the end of apartheid rule in South Africa in the 1980's.

Dr Buti was a former Minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, which supported the apartheid system. Going against the racist position of his church he was appointed as the moderator for the breakaway arm of the white dominated Dutch Reformed Church, which is now called the Uniting Reformed Church in Africa.

His relentless commitment to the struggles of the poor and oppressed was evident in his community work in Alexandra Township.
