The Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet today visited Elundini local municipality in the UKhahlamba district municipality. The visit marks the beginning of the Provincial Executive Council (Exco) Outreach Programme taking place throughout the province from 29 June to 22 July 2009.
Day two of the Exco outreach is dedicated to unmediated public engagement between political principals and the people. Premier Kiviet visited certain government funded community development projects in the area. In her engagement with the public, Premier Kiviet emphasised the importance of community projects, and noted that "Community based projects are a critical tool towards the advancement of government's stated mission of prioritising rural development."
The Premier's engagement was accompanied by a range of services on wheels. Hundreds of people from around the area received services on the site at the uLundini Sports filed where the Premier also delivered a brief address thanking the people for voting in the manner they did. Over thirty-three grants have been approved there and then.
Nokhayilothi Siyile, a parent from Nxotshona village applied for a child support grant and this is what she had to say, "I came here and applied for my child’s grant. After waiting for a short time the officials told me that my application has been approved, I didn't believe it but here I am." Impressed that her grant has been approved on the same day that she applied, Nokhayilothi thanked the government for bringing services to the people.
The Exco outreach programme coincides with the Public Service Week. On 2 July, the Exco outreach proceeds to Chris Hani District municipality with day one focusing on government to government and organised stakeholder engagements session.
