Parliament Women’s Summit on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Parliament is holding a two-day Women’s Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on 30 and 31 August.

The summit will bring together delegates from civil society, provincial legislatures, women members of Parliament and the executive to discuss progress on the MDGs and how they impact on the lives of women.

The 10th United Nations (UN) Millennium Summit is scheduled to take place in New York, United States, from 20 to 22 September, where world leaders will assess progress towards meeting eight international development goals by 2015.

The goals are:

  • Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieving universal primary education
  • Promoting gender equality and empowering women
  • Reducing child mortality
  • Improving maternal health
  • Combating HIV and AIDS and other diseases
  • Ensuring environmental sustainability
  • Developing global partnerships to meet the goals

Discussion at Parliament’s summit on the MDGs will occur in commissions on Monday 30 August and in plenary on Tuesday 31 August.

Commissions will examine:

  • progress, challenges and gaps in achieving the MDGs and the implications for women.
  • mechanisms that should be put in place to ensure South Africa meets its MDG obligations.
  • how to ensure that gender is mainstreamed in the MDGs.
  • specific recommendations, for achieving the MDGs, that should be made to the Executive, national and provincial Legislatures and civil society organisations.
