North West Public Safety focus on reduction of environmental factors that cause crime

Reduction of environmental factors that contribute towards crimes against women and children as well as serious and violent crimes will be the focus of the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) workshop to be conducted by the North West Department of Public Safety in Moses Kotane Local Municipality on Thursday.

The objective of the one day workshop is to market the CPTED strategy to the local municipality and sensitise stakeholders within the municipality of the need to eliminate crime hotspots such as disused physical structures and pathways with overgrown vegetation within communities.

Improving lighting through installation of high mast lights in some communities has significantly contributed towards reduction of crime. The workshop to be attended by among others traditional leaders, representatives of the business sector, members of community policing forums, councillors and municipal officials is primarily meant to encourage the municipality to develop its own local CPTED Strategy.

The South African Police Service is to also make a presentation at the workshop scheduled to commence at 09h00 at the Moses Kotane Local Municipality Offices in Mogwase.
