Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to sign Grasslands Declaration

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Buyelwa Sonjica will on
Thursday, 8 July 2010 sign the Grasslands Declaration to commit government to the conservation of grasslands biodiversity. It is envisaged that the declaration will also be signed by provincial MECs for environment.

The declaration is an effort to collaborate in good faith to pursue biodiversity targets and objectives in securing and sustaining the ecosystem services of the grasslands biome.

Grasslands occur in eight of South Africa’s nine provinces. Government established the grasslands programme to protect and conserve grasslands. The South African grasslands biome is the second largest biome in South Africa, covering an area of 339 237km.

Media is invited to the signing ceremony and a press briefing.
