Minister van Schalkwyk to promote domestic tourism in Soweto

Soweto is one of the most exciting destination stops in South Africa and now the FNB Stadium just outside Soweto is about to start delivering its legacy as a world class venue for international sports clashes.

The Minister of Tourism, Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk will tour Soweto by motorcycle with the Soprano Bikers Club and some well-known South African personalities on Thursday, 19 August. The initiative forms part of the build up to the South Africa-New Zealand Tri Nations Rugby match at Soccer City on Saturday, 21 August as well as our Sho’t Left campaign to encourage domestic tourism.

Please join Minister van Schalkwyk and South African Tourism at this event at the Ipelegeng Community Centre. A light finger buffet will be served after the Minister’s address to journalists.

  • 12h00: The Minister, bikers, celebrities, dignitaries and media meet at the Soweto Hotel
  • 12h00-12h30: The Minister, bikers, selected dignitaries and media take a Sho’t Left to Soweto Towers, Sakhumzi Restaurant and Mandela’s house in Vilakazi Street (there will be photo opportunities for the media at all tourism attractions) and then proceed to Ipelegeng Community Centre.
  • 12h30-12h35: Welcome by Community singing group
  • 12h35-12h40: Brief background of the centre by Community Representative
  • 12h40-12h50: Interactive gum booting/Interactive drumming
  • 12h50-12h55: Welcome and Introduction by SA Tourism CEO
  • 12h55-13h00: Speech by Minister
  • 13h00-13h10: Questions and answers
  • 13h10-13h20: One on one interviews (where required)
  • 13h20-13h30: Depart for Soweto Hotel
  • 13h30-13h40: Brief site inspection of the hotel and Free Charter Museum
