Minister Sonjica to launch Mthatha radar system

Buyelwa Sonjica, the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs will officially launch the new state of the art radar system in Mthatha, Eastern Cape on 16 July 2010.

The minister will also hand over a project sponsored by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) to refurbish the Highbury Junior Secondary School in Mthatha. The launch is also significant as it coincides with the SAWS's celebration of 150 years of service to South Africans in 2010.

Government has granted SAWS R240 million for infrastructure investment to upgrade and replace its over 30 years old radar systems to bring about a substantially improved weather observation network that meets contemporary needs.
